SEX, ATTACHMENT & WHY MEN LOSE INTEREST AFTER SEX
We’ve heard all about the role oxytocin plays in attachment and how it can cause women to “catch feelings.” (Not a thing.) What we rarely discuss the other hormone involved with pair bonding: vasopressin.
Here are some fun facts:
Men and women both produce oxytocin and vasopressin
Women produce more oxytocin because of its involvement with child birth (oxytocin is a natural pain-reliever as well as help create uterine contractions necessary to give birth), lactation and mother/child bonding.
Men experience the effects of vasopressin more intensely because of how it interacts with testsoterone.
Here’s where things get interesting:
Anthropologist Dr. Helen Fisher, PhD states that vasopressin rises after orgasm. Biologist Dawn Maslar states that vasopressin drops after orgasm.
This is a key inconsistency. Why? Because the former confirms that men can get attached after sex and the latter denies it.
